The Application Process

The Psychiatry Residency Program at Riverside University Health System is ACGME accredited. Programs will not discriminate with regard to sex, race, religion, color, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other applicable legally protected status. Eligible applicants will be considered only on the basis of residency program-related criteria. To be eligible for appointment to the RUHS residency program, applicants must be either a United States citizen or permanent resident. We currently do not sponsor visas.

Applications to the RUHS Psychiatry Residency Program will only be accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Please note, we do not accept applications and/or associated documents via mail or e-mail. The Electronic Residency Application Service address is www.aamc.org/eras. All residency positions will be accepted through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP), and can be accessed at www.nrmp.org.

How to Apply

  • Complete the NRMP match enrollment materials from AAMC
  • Complete the ERAS application for residencies
  • Acquire the following:
    • Application/Curriculum Vita
    • Medical School Transcript
    • Personal Statement
    • USMLE or COMLEX transcripts, as applicable
    • Three letters of reference from physicians
    • Dean’s Letter or Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
    • Photograph taken within the last six months

Salary & Benefits

As of July 1, 2023 the base salaries for Psychiatry Residents are as follows

  • PGY-1: $67,582.00
  • PGY-2: $69,820.00
  • PGY-3: $72,564.00
  • PGY-4: $75,428.00

Residents are paid bi-weekly for 26 pay periods per year and direct deposit of your paycheck is available. You will be given a County payroll calendar at Orientation.

Residents will receive the following benefits, subject to the same conditions applicable to Hospital exempt employees and the terms and conditions of the County of Riverside’s current benefit plans and/or policies. The benefits listed below may be modified unilaterally by RUHS from time to time:

Health and Dental Insurance: RUHS Human Resources will inform the Residents of various medical and dental insurance plans and options at the earliest opportunity so that residents may enroll early in an appropriate insurance plan. RUHS will provide comprehensive health insurance at no charge to the resident. Residents wanting family coverage for medical insurance shall pay the difference between the premium for the family plan and the premium for the individual plan.

Disability insurance: RUHS will provide long-term and short-term disability insurance to the resident

Life insurance: RUHS will provide life insurance coverage to the resident.

Worker’s Compensation: RUHS will provide Worker’s Compensation Insurance to the resident, consistent with RUHS’s benefits program.

Vacation: Fifteen days of paid vacation per academic Year.  Five days of paid conference time per academic year and holiday pay for all usual county holidays.

Counseling: Counseling services are available through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Lab coats / scrub suits: Lab coats and scrub suits are provided at no cost to the resident.

Meals: Meals at no cost are provided to the resident in the RUHS cafeteria while on 24-hour call with a limit of $5 per meal.

Housing: Other than access to call rooms with toilet and shower facilities while on call, RUHS does not provide housing.
