Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
About Our Program
Located in the heart of Riverside, our program offers a rich variety of clinical experiences across a broad spectrum of settings. Fellows receive close mentorship and supervision from dedicated faculty who are passionate about teaching and committed to each fellow’s personal and professional growth.
Our program is deeply rooted in a commitment to community mental health, health equity, and service to the underserved. We embrace a biopsychosocial and developmental perspective that acknowledges the complex interplay of individual, familial, cultural, and societal factors that shape the emotional lives of children and adolescents. We also emphasize the importance of wellness and professional identity development, helping fellows grow not only as clinicians but also as advocates, leaders, and human beings.
We are particularly proud of our emphasis on social determinants of health, trauma-informed care, and advocacy. Fellows are encouraged to engage in scholarship and community partnerships that reflect our program’s deep commitment to serving underserved and historically marginalized populations.
"Our program is deeply rooted in a commitment to community mental health, health equity, and service to the underserved."

It has been in operation since 1893 as Riverside County’s first general hospital and has over 60 hospital-based primary and specialty care clinics that have been recognized for the delivery of high-quality care.
It has academic affiliations with several medical and academic institutions, including University of California, Riverside, School of Medicine (SOM), Kaiser Permanente and Loma Linda University SOM and Medical Center. It provides a wide range of services to a large volume and a very diverse patient population. For example, the medical center Emergency Department receives approximately 100,000 patient visits a year.
Fellows on rotation at the medical center will have rich and diverse educational experience. They will have ample opportunities to learn to evaluate, diagnose and treat a wide array of medical and psychiatric disorders, and presentations commonly encountered in an acute care setting in an interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary team environment, learning to work collaboratively toward optimal patient care.
Mission
The Riverside University Health System (RUHS) Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program is committed to developing compassionate physicians who are exemplars of clinical excellence, leadership and scholarship. Child and adolescent psychiatrists matriculating from the comprehensive learning experiences offered by the program are prepared to practice in under-resourced settings.
Our educational curriculum and clinical experiences emphasize the physician's relationship to their patients and patients' families as central to healing. Patients are situated within a larger sociohistorical context, with change effected through treatment of the patient and their family, and through interventions directed at the systems within which patients are embedded.
RUHS fellows embrace intellectual curiosity, champion social justice and pursue mastery of medical knowledge and clinical skills.
