Our mature adult community members 60 years or older, sometimes need specific support that addresses the unique challenges of getting older. Peer Support Specialists, working in our Wellness & Recovery for Mature Adults Program, understand the many barriers mature adults can face. They have lived experiences that connect with aging community members. They receive training that fosters listening to the person they are supporting and understand how behavioral health, medical and social services work in the community. Peer Support Specialists can guide consumers and their caregivers through the complexities of accessing multiple systems at once. Physical challenges, health conditions and social isolation can often get in the way of a person’s ability to recover emotionally. Peer Support Specialists know this and are ready to begin conversations with the intent to share hope and encouragement to the people they serve, to live their best life, a life worth living. Peer Support Specialists are the evidence that recovery is possible.

The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) works as a member of the clinic/program team. The PSS brings unique experiences and perspective as a consumer, and someone in substance abuse recovery themselves. This Peer assists the team in the development and provision of culturally competent and recovery oriented behavioral health and substance use disorder services. The Peer Support Specialist contributes their personal experience, appropriate self-disclosure and empathy to outreach, network, support and engage with consumers of the agency. “Through shared understanding, respect, and mutual empowerment, peer support workers help people become and stay engaged in the recovery process and reduce the likelihood of relapse.” The experience of having “walked the same path” as other consumers while partnering with treatment team, enriches the culture of the agency and improves program effectiveness. Substance Abuse Prevention & Treatment Programs utilize peer support specialists in every level of care.
