Sports Medicine Fellowship

The Family Medicine Residency Program hosts an ACGME accredited Sports Medicine Fellowship that was established in 2018. Fellows who successful complete our one-year program can earn a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine. We offer two positions per year and accept applications from physicians who have completed residency training or are near completion of residency training in fields of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.

Fellows participate in a one-year longitudinal curriculum designed to develop their skills as Sports Medicine Physicians. Fellows regularly attend sports medicine continuity clinic, orthopedic sports medicine clinic, musculoskeletal ultrasound procedure clinic and sports medicine didactic sessions. Instead of the traditional "block" model where learners focus on one service or specialty each month, our fellows continuously have exposure to a variety of sports medicine learning experiences throughout the year. The longitudinal curriculum is designed to mimic the actual practice of physicians. Our purpose for using a longitudinal curriculum is to give our fellows exposure to variety of experiences but at the same time give them the experience of what a practice in sports medicine looks like. The curriculum is designed to achieve the medical knowledge, procedural skills, interpersonal skills, teaching skills, professionalism and competence required to care for physically active patients.

Our program offers weekly didactic sessions that are focused on topics in sports medicine. The didactic sessions include but are not limited to:

  • Lectures from faculty members and guest speakers
  • Sports Medicine Journal Club
  • Program Improvement Talks (PITs sessions)
  • Dedicated sports ultrasound sessions

The fellows in our program have extensive exposure to sports ultrasound through the use of ultrasound in the clinic setting, as well as participation in our sports ultrasound curriculum. We have designed a sports ultrasound curriculum that is consistent with the AMSSM recommendations for sports ultrasound curriculum for sports medicine fellowships. The sports ultrasound curriculum includes the following:

  • Sports ultrasound lectures
  • Hands-on sports ultrasound instruction
  • Clinical use of ultrasound for MSK exams and ultrasound guided procedures
  • Supplementary sports ultrasound education
