About Us

  • Riverside University Health System (RUHS) includes a 439-bed Medical Center in Moreno Valley, 13 clinics that are Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) providing primary and specialty care services, as well as the Behavioral and Public Health departments.

  • The Medical Center has adult, pediatric, and neonatal intensive care units, an adult surgical intensive care unit, an obstetrics unit, and complete pulmonary services with hyperbaric oxygen treatment capabilities. RUHS has been the foundation of healthcare, community wellness, and medical education in Riverside County for more than 100 years and employs approximately 8,500 team members.

  • The RUHS Emergency Department (ED) plays a significant role in providing emergency medical care in Riverside County. RUHS receives approximately 100,000 patient visits annually and serves as the first responder in the case of natural disaster for Riverside County. As a designated Level I Adult and Level II Pediatric Trauma center, RUHS treats nearly half of all trauma patients in the county.

Work Environment

As a level 1 trauma center, our Emergency Department (ED) serves as a dynamic, high-acuity environment where we manage over 100,000 visits annually, including ~1,500 traumas per year. This robust volume of patients creates an excellent learning hub. We also proudly serve as a Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center and a Primary Stroke Care Center, providing further opportunities to engage with a wide variety of critical patients across different age groups and medical needs. The diversity of patient cases allows residents to broaden their clinical knowledge and apply their learning across a broad spectrum of emergency medicine. Our department is enriched by a range of interdisciplinary programs, including the Emergency Medicine (EM) Medical Residency, EM Physician Assistant Fellowship, EM Ultrasound Fellowship, and EM Wilderness Medicine Fellowship. This diversity of professional backgrounds creates a collaborative, multidisciplinary learning environment that enhances the overall educational experience. You will work alongside experts from multiple disciplines, learning from their unique perspectives and contributing your own knowledge to the team. Additionally, our ED is home to an ED RN New Grad Program, offering teaching opportunities both through lectures and at the bedside. The collaborative, open environment, combined with the exposure to high-acuity cases, fosters an atmosphere where you will grow not only as a pharmacist but also as a valued member of a multidisciplinary team, ready to tackle the challenges of emergency medicine.

EM Pharmacist Role

The RUHS Emergency Medicine pharmacists have the unique advantage of being positioned in the heart of patient care, with a clear view of the ambulance bay and direct access to medical attendings, fellows, residents, the code team, and respiratory therapists. This prime location allows for seamless integration into the multidisciplinary team, providing immediate support during medical emergencies and answering on-demand medication-related questions. This exposure enables the EM pharmacist to facilitate the rapid administration of time-sensitive drug orders, ensure medication safety, assist with drug stewardship initiatives, perform urine culture review, and offer expert advice on complex drug and poisoning cases. Involvement also extends to contributing to the development and revision of electronic order-sets, hospital-wide guidelines and protocols, active participation in research projects, involvement in hospital committees, and resident and APPE student precepting. Through this and much more, the EM pharmacists continuously contribute to improvements in patient care and clinical practices within this high-acuity environment.

Patient Population

RUHS is a safety-net hospital and home to a diverse and medically underserved patient population, including patients from the California state penitentiary system and Riverside County jails. Patient demographics include Hispanic or Latino, White, Black or African-American, American Indian and Alaska Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander. The payor mix for our population is on average 84% Medi-Cal, 7% Medicare, 1.5% indigent, 5% self-pay, 2 % private payor.
