Family Medicine Residency
Our faculty group provides unparalleled expertise in many areas, from community involvement and
advocacy to sports medicine, women's health and academics. We strive to expose learners to all
aspects of Family Medicine so that they may find or expand upon their passion.
Our dynamic curriculum is regularly updated to reflect the interests of our faculty and resident
physicians, with the ultimate goals of improving training and reducing health disparities in our
diverse community. We use an innovative Clinic-First model to improve resident physician continuity
and engagement in the community.
Come and train where you will become well versed in handling a myriad of medical, social and
cultural issues; with an inspiring group of likeminded individuals, to better serve those who most
need it.
Thank you,
Nathan McLaughlin, MD
Curriculum
Year-by-year training structure and rotation schedule
RUHS/UCR Family Medicine Residency has fully transitioned to a "Clinic First Model" — placing higher value on more frequent and earlier continuity clinic experiences at our Moreno Valley Community Health Center (MVCHC). Residents establish relationships with continuity patients earlier in their training, improving the overall clinic experience. Our dynamic curriculum is regularly updated based on resident feedback, with the goals of improving training and reducing health disparities in our diverse Inland Empire community.
Overall, the resident rotational experience offers exposure to a wide range of inpatient and outpatient primary and specialty care. Family Medicine partners with all of the specialists at Riverside University Health System. Additionally, residents have an opportunity to work with any medical service offered in Riverside County such as Public Health and Behavioral Health.
Our clinical curriculum is based on the Clinic First Model. This model ensures early and consistent experiences at Moreno Valley Community Health Center and also results in increased resident-sided and patient-sided continuity. Each resident has a recurring half day throughout the year when they will be assigned to see patients in the clinic, with rare exceptions on select inpatient rotations.
Finally, in collaboration with the many resources of Riverside County, established and new residencies at RUHS, and the enthusiasm of our residents, we are solidifying our elective 1-week options and 6-week tracks. Current tracks include HIV, Medical Spanish, Intellectual and Developmental Disability, and upcoming Lifestyle Medicine.
