The Application Process
The Psychiatry Residency Program at Riverside University Health System is ACGME accredited. Programs will not discriminate with regard to sex, race, religion, color, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other applicable legally protected status. Eligible applicants will be considered only on the basis of residency program-related criteria. To be eligible for appointment to the RUHS residency program, applicants must be either a United States citizen or permanent resident. We currently do not sponsor visas.
Applications to the RUHS Psychiatry Residency Program will only be accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Please note, we do not accept applications and/or associated documents via mail or e-mail. The Electronic Residency Application Service address is www.aamc.org/eras. All residency positions will be accepted through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP), and can be accessed at www.nrmp.org.
Salary
As of July 1, 2024 the base salaries for Residents are as follows:
- PGY-1: $70,962.00
- PGY-2: $73,311.00
- PGY-3: $76,193.00
- PGY-4: $79,200.00
- PGY-5: $82,411.00
- PGY-6: $85,504.00
- PGY-7: $88,347.00
Residents are paid biweekly for 26 pay periods per year and direct deposit of your paycheck is available. You will be provided a County payroll calendar at orientation.
Residents receive the following benefits, subject to the same conditions applicable to hospital exempt employees and the terms and conditions of the County of Riverside's current benefit plans and/or policies. The benefits listed below may be modified unilaterally by RUHS from time to time:
Educational Allowance: Residents are given an educational allowance as a lump sum as well as 5 CME days off per year to support the education and scholarly aspirations of our residents.
Health and Dental Insurance: RUHS Human Resources informs the residents of various medical and dental insurance plans and options at the earliest opportunity so that residents may enroll early in an appropriate insurance plan. RUHS provides comprehensive health insurance at no charge to the resident. Residents wanting family coverage for medical insurance shall pay the difference between the premium for the family plan and the premium for the individual plan.
Disability Insurance: RUHS provides long-term and short-term disability insurance to the resident.
Life Insurance: RUHS provides life insurance coverage to the resident.
Worker's Compensation: RUHS provides worker's compensation insurance to the resident, consistent with the RUHS benefits program.
Vacation: Fifteen days of paid vacation per academic year. Five days of paid conference time per academic year and holiday pay for all the usual county holidays.
Counseling: Counseling services are available through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
Lab Coats/Scrub Suits: Lab coats and scrub suits are provided at no cost to the resident.
Meals: Meals at no cost are provided to the resident in the RUHS cafeteria while on 24-hour. The meal allowance is $16.50 per day.
Housing: Other than access to call rooms with toilet and shower facilities while on call, RUHS does not provide housing.
Prospective Residents
To be eligible for appointment at Riverside University Health System applicants must be US citizens, permanent residents or under J-1 visa sponsorship. RUHS is able to sponsor J-1 visas.
We follow the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) from the Association of American Medical Colleges for the application deadline. However, applicants are strongly encouraged to submit early applications prior to mid-October when interviews will begin. Applications are accepted only through ERAS. Please do not send applications and associated documents through the mail or e-mail.
RUHS Medical Center participates in the National Resident Matching Program. Please register with them if you wish to be matched with our program.
Minimum Application documentation:
Prior to being placed on a rank list or offered a pre-match position, applicants must have submitted the following documentation:
- Application
- Curriculum vita
- Medical school transcript
- Dean's letter or Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
- Three letters of reference from physicians
- Photograph taken within the last six months
- USMLE or COMLEX transcripts, as applicable
- Personal statement
- If any required documents are in a language other than English, then a translation of the document(s) must be provided.
Medical school graduates outside the United States must also provide the following:
- Current Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Certificate
- Current California Post-doctoral Training Approval Letter or California Medical License
Our virtual interview dates are held in October, November, and December. We hold an in person open house, and a second look day. We will also host multiple virtual meet and greets throughout interview season. Please email us for an interview calendar with all dates.

Appointments
Applicants that successfully match the program must provide the following additional documentation prior to the start of the program:
- Official medical school transcript indicating that a degree was issued and date of issuance
- Copy of medical school diploma
- Copy of social security card
- Copy of current driver's license
- Copy of permanent resident card
- Copy of current BLS and ACLS certifications
- If required documentation is in different names, then proof of name change (i.e. marriage certificate or court document) must be provided
- If any required documents are in a language other than English, then a translation of the document must be provided
In addition to the above, prior to appointment date, the applicant must have successfully completed all RUHS pre-employment requirements, including, but not limited to, a pre-employment physical and Department of Justice background check.
Failure to provide any required documents or to successfully complete all pre-employment requirements by the date of appointment will result in automatic withdrawal from the training program.
