Forensic Psychiatry Fellowships
Thank you for your interest in pursuing additional subspecialty training in the Department of Psychiatry at Riverside University Health System. Our accredited fellowship programs in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry emphasize learning and clinical training in public sector settings within the Inland Empire.
Fellows work closely with patients, families and the healthcare, educational and legal systems. Our mission is to develop psychiatrists with expertise in their respective subspecialties, whether providing expert opinions for the legal system or consulting on child and adolescent mental health issues for families and primary care practitioners.
We support robust educational opportunities, participation in organized medicine and advocacy and personal growth through close mentorship.
Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship
The American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL) defines forensic psychiatry as “a medical subspecialty that includes research and clinical practice in the many areas in which psychiatry is applied to legal issues.
"We support robust educational opportunities, participation in organized medicine and advocacy and personal growth through close mentorship."
Forensic Psychiatry Director's Invitation
The Riverside University Health System (RUHS) Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program trains psychiatrists who are intellectually curious, eager to contribute to the wellness of underserved communities and committed to the pursuit of justice for individuals who experience severe mental illness.
Offering clinical experiences in correctional psychiatry within the jail, state hospital and medical center environments, fellows are exposed to the mechanics of clinical psychiatry within the custodial setting.
Our program focuses on the mastery of forensic report writing and testimony with rigorous emphasis on historical judicial precedent, communication skills, the history of psychiatry and the ethics of forensic psychiatry.
We also offer exposure to the practice of forensic psychiatry in civil proceedings through fellow mentorship of other learners and testimony offered in a forensic capacity. We cater to and strengthen each fellow's personal interests and foster independence and confidence in the field.

My forensic psychiatry fellowship at Riverside University Health System has been an outstanding and deeply fulfilling experience. Even as the only fellow, I've been welcomed into a professional and supportive environment where I'm treated with respect and regarded as a valued colleague. The attendings provide thoughtful, collaborative supervision that has helped me grow both clinically and forensically. My training has included work across diverse settings—CARE Court, AOT, the state hospital, and both inpatient and outpatient correctional systems—as well as specific forensic consultations involving high-risk violence and suicide assessments and other complex medico-legal questions. These experiences have prepared me to become a well-rounded forensic evaluator and clinician. I'm genuinely grateful to have trained here, which is why I'm excited to continue working with Riverside County after fellowship. It's a place where I've grown, felt supported, and truly feel at home in my professional life.
