Since 2010, Injury Prevention Services (IPS) has received funding through the Riverside University Health System – Behavioral Health to assist school districts in the development of a Teen Suicide Awareness and Prevention Program (TSAPP).

Program Goals

  • Increase awareness surrounding the issue of teen suicide in Riverside County.
  • Promote positive youth development by training students to act as a resource for their peers in seeking mental health services.
  • Reduce youth suicide injuries and fatalities.

Program Overview

Student Component

  • High Schools – Provide education to students on how to support a friend or peer in crisis or having thoughts of suicide. Students will be trained in the steps of engaging in conversation, asking the direct question of suicide, and connecting the friend or peer to a trusted adult on campus for further support.
  • Middle Schools - Train a group on each campus to take the lead and establish a Crisis/Suicide Prevention program for their school site. Our program is designed to train youth in how to address the issues of suicide with their peers and link them to a trusted adult for immediate support.
    • This includes coordinating two awareness campaigns throughout the year helping to reduce the stigma surrounding seeking mental health services for Middle and High School
