Letter from the Program Director
The Riverside University Health System (RUHS) Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program trains psychiatrists who are intellectually curious, eager to contribute to the wellness of underserved communities and committed to the pursuit of justice for individuals who experience severe mental illness. Offering clinical experiences in correctional psychiatry within the jail, state hospital and medical center environments, fellows are exposed to the mechanics of clinical psychiatry within the custodial setting. Our program focuses on the mastery of forensic report writing and testimony with rigorous emphasis on historical judicial precedent, communication skills, the history of psychiatry and the ethics of forensic psychiatry. We also offer exposure to the practice of forensic psychiatry in civil proceedings through fellow mentorship of other learners and testimony offered in a forensic capacity. We cater to and strengthen each fellow's personal interests and foster independence and confidence in the field.

Curriculum

Year-by-year training structure and rotation schedule

Client interviews and report writing: It is an ACGME requirement of the fellowship to provide the fellow with time to interview clients, prepare forensic reports, and engage in research, prepare teaching materials (resident didactics and grand rounds), and other scholarly activities (including a mandatory QI project).

Client interviews: The fellow will be receiving a variety of case appointments with clients who are incarcerated at any one of Riverside Countys five county jails, structured placements (board & care settings, nursing facilities, locked placements), Arlington campus or the medical center (some clients are inpatients), the resident-operated clinic (the RECC, located on Arlington campus)Testimony in a forensic capacity: Patients at Arlington campus and at the medical center may have court-based hearings that require in-person testimony at the Riverside Courthouse. In the setting where the treating psychiatric team is unable to spare a psychiatrist to provide testimony, the fellow would testify in the hearing on behalf of the treating team. This would include: traveling to the site where the patient is located (Arlington campus or the medical center) and traveling to the Riverside Courthouse to provide testimony
